One gift was a poem by the Basque writer and thinker Jon Sarasua, delivered in Euskera and translated into Quechua. The text values linguistic and cultural diversity and recognizes the pope's commitment to indigenous languages throughout his career.

The Basque Government explains that with the gesture  wants to thank Pope  for his involvement with the world's minority cultures and languages  The poem defines the Basque Country as a "community and task" and as a collective effort to keep alive an open identity "from particularity to all".
