Language and education are the two fundamental pillars of a people's identity—essential roots that must be nurtured and strengthened. In Euskal Herria, there is extensive knowledge and experience in language revitalization, as well as an innovative and transformative educational model. This is how today's ikastolas, including Arizmendi Ikastola, carry out their work. “Rather than exporting our model, we explain it to anyone interested in learning about it, so that they can adapt and apply it in their own context,” says Iñaki González.
González is a teacher at Arizmendi Ikastola and coordinator of the Olarte campus. He has also collaborated with Garabide for more than twenty years, working intensively on the revitalization of minoritized languages. He recently travelled to the Mixe region of Mexico, located in the state of Oaxaca. The Mixe territory lies in the mountainous northeastern part of Oaxaca, covering an area of approximately 4,600 square kilometres. It is a geographically isolated region where the Ayuujk (Mixe) language is spoken.
