Carlos Santiago Moreta: “What kind of identity is it if it lacks its own language?”

Carlos Santiago Moreta is a Kichwa speaker. He was born in Otavalo, in Ecuador’s Imbabura Province. As a young boy, he became involved with the Imbabura Kichwa Youth Association, where he became aware of the importance of language. He was Indigenous, but he did not speak the language of his community. He began speaking it at the age of 12 and today is deeply committed to language revitalization efforts.
